Hi, I took my 6 month old iPhone in for repair last week and it was replaced as it was faulty. However, the genius guy said my old warranty still stood so I only have six months left. Isn't the warranty on the item bit the contract, i.e. I should get another 12 months?

Not possible 6 months after original purchase. Apple Care+ can only be purchased within 60 days of having bought the device.

Sure. However, my first Apple product was an Apple //c. However, my first Mac was an iBook G3 600 which I still have.
The warranty terms vary by country, but the terms that state that the remaining warranty period is still in effect (or 90 days if longer) is pretty universal.
