slow ethernet connection for migration

My goal is to use direct ethernet connection to migrate from 2010 mac pro to latest mac mini. I am using the migration assistant. Have bqeen able to make the connection but at the rate it is going it will take 30 hours to transfer 600 gigs. Have tried twice with same result.

What am I doing wrong?

Matti has made an excellent suggestion:

Use target disk mode to move files to another computer - Apple Support

Another way you might try if the Migration doesn't complete would be to remove your TM disk and put it in an enclosure.

In theory 100 BaseT ethernet is 100 Mb/s so in theory 600 GB of large files should transfer in 13,3 hours.

So that 30 hours / 600 GB sounds very reasonable and you network should be OK.

As far as I know Thunderbolt 3's advertised 40000 Mb/s is in reality 22000 Mb/s for file transfers because of the overhead reserved for display streams.

Other theoretical max speeds that in practice are somewhat lower:

USB 3.1 10000 Mb/s

USB 3.0 5000 Mb/s

FW800 800 Mb/s

USB2 480 Mb/s

FW400 400 Mb/s

24x CD 28.8 Mb/s

USB1 12 Mb/s

10 BaseT ethernet 10 Mb/s

56K modem 0.048 Mb/s

floppy drive...

I'll second macjack's earlier suggestion.

Remove the Time Machine Backup Drive from the 2010 Mac Pro and put it into a USB enclosure or on a USB to SATA adapter and plug it directly into your new Mac Mini.
