Maps not rendering

I have searched everywhere for anything on this. I found a post from earlier in the year on this exact issue, but it was closed with nothing learned.

Maps will open and function but fails to actually show any imagery. It knows where I am. It knows where I want to go. It knows where what I search for is.

It only shows a grid.

I have deleted preferences, quit com.apple.geod, permissions, re-instal Maps.app, restart, etc. All the standard troubleshooting steps.

I do have two plist files in my account for Maps:

Macintosh HD⁩ ▸ ⁨Users⁩ ▸ ⁨derek⁩ ▸ ⁨Library⁩ ▸ ⁨⁨Preferences⁩ ▸ ⁨com.apple.Maps⁩

Macintosh HD⁩ ▸ ⁨Users⁩ ▸ ⁨derek⁩ ▸ ⁨Library⁩ ▸ ⁨Containers⁩ ▸ ⁨com.apple.Maps⁩ ▸ ⁨Data⁩ ▸ ⁨Library⁩ ▸ ⁨Preferences⁩ ▸ ⁨com.apple.Maps⁩

The first one does not appear to be live. The second does.

I only have one plist in the new user account... located in Containers.

It does work in a new user account... so, what within my user account can be going on? What can I look at? If none of the above mentioned user related things worked.

Hi Derek Holiman,

I understand when using Maps in your primary user account, the images will not load and all you can see is a grid. I also see that you've isolated this to your user account as the behavior doesn't occur when testing in a new user and taken some further troubleshooting steps, I appreciate you including that information. I know how important it is for Maps to render properly; I'd like to help. If you haven't already, I'd recommend using the steps below to start your Mac in safe mode and test for the issue; because graphics performance is limited in safe mode it may take some time for Maps to load:

"Start up in safe mode

To start up in safe mode:

    1. Start or restart your Mac, then immediately press and hold the Shift key. The Apple logo appears on your display. If you don't see the Apple logo, learn what to do.
    2. Release the Shift key when you see the login window. If your startup disk is encrypted with FileVault, you might be asked to log in twice: once to unlock the startup disk, and again to log in to the Finder.

To leave safe mode, restart your Mac without pressing any keys during startup.

If an issue doesn't happen in safe mode

If an issue doesn't happen when your Mac is started in safe mode, try restarting without pressing any keys.

    • If the issue comes back, you might have incompatible login items.
    • If the issue doesn't come back, it was probably caused by a cache or directory issue with your startup disk, which safe mode fixed."

Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac

If the issue isn't resolved by using safe mode and checking your login items, I'd recommend reaching out to Apple for further assistance: Contact Apple Support

Best Regards.
