Reboot the laptop and try again. Assuming a windows laptop you could try the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter:

  1. Type “Troubleshooting” in the Search bar and press Enter.
  2. Click on “View All” in the top left corner.
  3. Click on Hardware and Devices from the list and follow the steps in the troubleshooter.

I can now hear my AirPods on my LG laptop and iPhone. However I had to set them as my audio output device and the sound is lousy. It sound is perfect on my phone but not when paired with my laptop. I checked for updates on my laptop but I am up to date on all. I restarted my laptop several times. I disconnected and reconnected the AirPods on my laptop several times too.
