It would help to know the exact model laptop and OS you are using which can be retrieved by clicking the Apple menu and selecting "About this Mac".
Also would be helpful to know what HDD docking station you purchased. The "All in 1" part worries me.
Open the Apple System Profiler (Option click the Apple menu) and check to see if the HDD dock is physically seen as a connected device (don't worry about seeing an actual drive).
Thanks
That is the correct one. So far no problems to read old HDs that I wanted to check and copy data from it (mainly photo RAW files)
Hi Thanks for the answer.
I have solved the problem but give the info for reference
My laptop is a Macbook Pro 13 inch 2017 with 2 thunderbolt 3 ports
Operating system macOS Majove ver 10.14.6
The docking station is a "All in 1 HDD docking" station type 875
The problem was that the adaptor cable between the Thunderbolt port and USB cable of the adaptor was faulty and the problem was resolved by replacing the adapter cable.
The All in 1 HDD docking" was picked up by the laptop and actually works pretty well with the different hard drives that I tested in it. (I'm not associated with the product)

Sounds like this one:

I'm a bit skeptical just because of the name, but it does appear to have 3 connectors for IDE and SATA 2.5/3.5 drives and a host of media card slots.
