Glitch in menus

Recently, when using VLC, the menus started behaving glitchy. They would be offset to the right, large, flickery, and with a purple background. Restarting the computer helped, but only temporarily.

Now the problem sometimes occurs with all menus (not only the menus in VLC).

This is a screenshot, except that it isn't actually what the screen looks like - I can see purple, and the text from the menus, but this gives you an idea.

Help?!?

1 - log into another user account on your Mac and see if the problem persists there. This will tell us iff the problem is limited to your account or is system wide.

2 - boot into Safe Mode and see if the problem persists in VLC. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 10 minutes as it's doing some system cache cleaning, volume verifying and directory repairing.

FWIW, movies won't play normally in Safe Mode.

Before that point, though, the menus looked normal, at least.

That normally means you have something installed that is causing a problem.

Post an EtreCheck report for analysis.

FWIW, you have software installed that is unnecessary and some that goes back to 2013 and some I'm not familiar with. You don't need Sophos, Cisco AnyConnect,VideoGuard, TunnelBear, etc. I don't know what the Delantis software is from 2013-2014.

If it were my Mac, I would erase the drive, reinstall Mojave and just install the apps I really needed.

Hi. Thanks for your help.

  1. First of all, I deleted and reinstalled VLC. Problem persists.
  2. I created a new user account. Problem persists.
  3. I booted into Safe Mode. I was unable to actually play videos in VLC. They just flickered then the program crashed. Before that point, though, the menus looked normal, at least.
  4. I restarted my machine and the problem persists.

Any ideas?

VideoGuard you may need. I looked it up and is used to play DirectTV. No one needs Sophos or any antivirus program on a Mac. They slow performance and occasionally quarantine system files they shouldn't. Cisco software is known to cause problems. No one needs a VPN unless you connect to public networks.

As far as the apps from 2013, there's a good chance they aren't compatible with Mojave or the latest updates for Mojave. Seeing you don't have the problem in Safe Mode, it has to be one of the apps you have installed causing it.

Maybe someone else will have an idea.

Let me add this:

Once playing a video on VLC, *all* of the menus for all the other progams I have open don't work properly.

When I stop playing video (by File > Close menu), which leaves the app open, the menus are fine again.

So there is something about playing a video (I've tried several) in VLC which messes with the menus.

Nik

PS I reinstalled OS Mojave. Don't have time right now to wipe the disk and reinstall everything. I got rid of some old and unused apps. Problem persists.
