iPhone XS coating

After 3 months my iPhone XS max is starting to show peeling off the black coating.

The phone is in pristine conditions, never dropped or scratched. Is it normal?

I went to the Apple store on Regent street in London where they examined it. They didn't find the cause and they wouldn't do anything about it.. So I'm stuck with a 3 months old phone that is peeling off...

I agree, it shouldn't happen! I'll try a different location.
Do you guys know how to deal directly with Apple? I'd like to send these pictures to them and see what they say.
It's so annoying to have spent over a $1000 and been left with a faulty phone...

I'd take it to another Apple Store for a second opinion. Also - where did you purchase it? You mentioned dollars, and I'm not sure if it was purchased in another country or if you bought it in the UK. iPhone warranties/service aren't considered international, although the European Economic Area is considered a single "country" despite currency differences and even Brexit. For some reason Switzerland is thrown in for good measure.

If Apple does anything under warranty, it would be a complete swap for an issue such as yours.

I've had and still do Apple products, never this occurred to me. I thought Apple would stand behind their products...

The warranty states that cosmetic damage isn’t covered unless it’s a defect in materials or workmanship. I’d take it to another location and see what they say. This shouldn’t happen.

I actually thought about it, i feel like I'm stuck... what would you guys suggest doing? Im sure you would be just as frustrated.

I don't use a case because I love the design of the phone as it is. Nut it's been checked at the store and they confirmed there is no scratch or dent or any visual damage. They just can't understand why it's doing it and that's it...

usually on my desk or in my pocket (never put keys or anything in my pockets) The phone as I said is in pristine conditions and because I love to use it without the case I pay even more careful attention. I pointed out that the peeling is in correspondence of where I use the fingers to hold it and maybe the a faulty coating has worn off? they said "no possible"...

Thanks for your help on this

The cloth from your pocket could be causing it as it can be abrasive depending upon the material but it could also be you that is causing it, the oils from your fingers could be reacting with the coating that is used on the iPhone. I have this problem with some coatings bluing on handguns so I have to wipe it down immediately after handling it.

Again, going to a different Apple Store accomplishes nothing with their current system. And yes I have recently talked to a service manager about this at an Apple Store. It is also clear that cosmetic damage is not covered under the warranty.

If they want a second opinion they can go back and talk to the Service Manager. But I have a feeling if they got a replacement unit and didn't use a case they would end up with the same result given how they used their phone and where the damage is. It is something they will have to be wary of.

Well... then they should say that you have to buy a case... Again, over a $1000 products, should not look damaged after 3 months. But I get your point.

It looks like the anodized coating is flaking off. Even if there are scratches, it shouldn't come off in flakes like yours obviously did.
