When we open the camera app, the last taken photo shows up. Is there a way to hide this photo? This becomes very essential, especially, when we hand over the phone to someone else for capturing a photo.

If you initiate the camera from the lock screen by either pressing the camera icon or swiping left, it does not show the last photo taken. The camera only shows last photo taken when the device is unlocked.

Yes, I figured this as a missing piece. I submitted a feedback request. This seems to be a piece which lacks but it's definitely a privacy concern. The reason I hit on to this so late is because I use another App to click photos. I tried the native Camera today and realized this. Thank you for helping.

And, it keeps nosy people out of the rest of the phone.... Simple and obvious, now that you've pointed it out!

No, there isn't. However, as you hand the phone to someone else, hit the shutter button and take a picture of the floor or whatever. If they question you about it and you feel obligated to answer, just say, "How clumsy of me!"

My additional advice is, if you make a habit of handing your unlocked phone to other people, don't keep pictures you wouldn't want them to see on it. It only takes a second for someone to go from the Camera to Photos.
Using a different app that better suits your needs is also an excellent solution.
Ultimately, we are each responsible for our own privacy. If Apple made the iPhone work in such a way that you could casually hand the phone to someone and they would have no way of accessing your data, the phone would be much less convenient for you to use.
Try Camera +. It's not free but it's an excellent app. I just tested and there is no thumbnail of the last picture.
