Keyboard vowels not responsive with mojave.

I have a mid-2012 Macbook Pro with 8GB RAM i7 processor and graphic coprocessor. Never any hardware or keyboard issues before Mojave.

Since upgrading to Mojave, I have repeated issues with some vowels (especially i and o, but also others) not being responsive. Like REALLY not responsive. Like for 20 seconds not responsive. I try to type protein and I get prtn. So then I back up and tap the o several times, then HOLD it down for 20 or 30 seconds. Ah, then I get a pop up menu for all the variations of accented o's I have available. And then the o works for the rest of my typing session. After the first letter recovers from its 'stroke' the other vowels come back a little quicker, and then i am typing normally.

I have had an Apple employee tell me it is a hardware issue, but that makes no sense. (a) First happened with a software OS upgrade. (b) Only certain keys affected and always those that have accent option popups. (c) Recovers after the software popup appears. --- Pretty sure those are software, keyboard polling issue indicators.

It seemed to be worse before I turned off all the smart quote and accessibility sticky key options i could locate. But I think there may be another option I have not found or which has no off switch.

Anybody have any ideas? Similar problems?

Hey Tunesmith82,

Good thinking with checking the accessibility.

With any issue, I like to isolate a bit further. It began after a software update. It affects vowels.

  1. Have you tried restarting the computer? (I know its simple but it helps!)
  2. Try resetting the SMC
  3. Try starting up in Safe Mode - does the issue occur in safe mode? Then it's probably software related. You can try creating a test user. If the issue does happen in safe mode, Id contact Apple Support again.
  4. If software related and the issue still occurs in a Test User, I would recommend backing up your computer to Time Machine and then reinstalling the Mac OS.

I hope this helps! For any help with following articles, Apple Support is great at answering questions.
