i have an iphone xs max, both screen and back are cracked but i only want to fix the screen for now, will the cracked back be any problem? And will I still pay just the $329 w/ tax for my phone screen?

Apple likely will not repair just the front screen. They will insist on a full replacement since the back isn't fixable. I believe the replacement is $599 for the XS Max.

Apple will not replace the display if the back is damaged. Your only option is to have the entire device replaced.
So if I pay $599 I won’t have to pay an extra $329 for the screen? If so than I’ll probably do that because at first I thought I had to pay $329 and $599 a total of $928, at that point i would’ve been willing to just waiting for iPhone 11. - thank you

That's correct. $599 (plus tax) is the cost for a complete replacement device.
