Thanks for your advice. Since this problem started a few weeks ago I had regularly checked Preferences & removed the rogue search engines if they were there.

Had a chat to Apple support and subsequently ran Malwarebytes. Despite that report saying x-number of dodgy issues was fixed, on restart up came Search Baron! So, did a basic Firefox reset and which seems to have removed both of those sites. Thanks again for your help.

I'm also plagued by Search Baron. The simple fixes like "delete anything in your Activity Monitor that looks suspicious" are useless, because I don't know how to tell what looks suspicious from what's absolutely necessary to the operation of my MacBook Pro. Also, nowhere in this forum do I see answers listed--just questions. Like others, I've also done the "install Malware Bytes" thing, and it doesn't seem to have had any impact at all. Help!

   1. Remove unknown profiles, if present.

      System Preferences > Profiles

Open System Preferences,  select “General and click  the “Profiles” icon ( a checkmark on a gear) .

When Profiles pane opens, select the unknown profile and click the minus button at the bottom.

Section: Remove a configuration profile from your Mac

      Profiles: https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/configuration-profiles-standardize-settings-mh35561/mac

  2. Remove unknown extensions:  Safari > Preferences > Extensions

      https://support.apple.com/guide/safari/use-safari-extensions-sfri32508/mac

   3. Check for adware.

Run the latest release of Malwarebytes for Mac to remove malware/adware, if installed on your Mac.

For instructions: Install Malwarebytes for Mac v4      Uninstall Malwarebytes for Mac

Click the “Scan Now” button. Once done, quit Malwarebytes for Mac.

Restart the computer and relaunch Safari holding the shift key down.

       Scan for Malware again.

       Additional steps  if necessary.

  4. Reset search engine:    https://support.apple.com/guide/safari/customize-your-search-ibrwe75c2a3c/mac

  5. Reset  Homepage.   https://support.apple.com/guide/safari/set-your-homepage-ibrw1020/mac

  6. Check proxies. SOCKS?

System Preferences > Network > Advanced > Proxies

      Deselect   any  proxies if selected.

   7. Restart your Mac. Relaunch Safari holding the Shift key down.

If Safari's home page is stuck

In some cases, after being changed by adware or malware, Safari's home page can become stuck. You will be able to edit the Homepage field in Safari's preferences, but the change will not stick. This appears to be a bug, and there is an odd workaround. Try this:

1. In Safari, choose Preferences from the Safari menu.

2. In the window that opens, click the General icon (if necessary)

3. Enter your desired home page in the "Homepage" field, but DO NOT press return!

4. At the top of the window, click any of the other icons (eg, Tabs, AutoFill, etc).

5. You may see a prompt asking for confirmation for changing the home page. If so, confirm.

6. Switch back to the General page and check to make sure the home page has been changed.

Hello!

If I understand correctly you are trying to remove the separate search bar within firefox. I would recommend that you go into the preferences for firefox in order to change this setting (see image below). You can also change any other settings for firefox from with the preferences window.

Let me know if this helps!

I had two long chats with Apple Help. Neither resolved anything. Here's what I found through trial and (lots and lots and lots of) error though: the virus (?) wasn't in my computer; it was in my browser. With Chrome, my Google searches kept turning into Search Baron which redirected me to Bing. So I deleted Chrome and got Firefox. Firefox got infected in only moments. It gave into Search Baron and thereby to Bing. Then I got rid of Firefox AND Chrome and went with Safari ONLY, since it's already on my computer. All my problems stopped. So I figured WAHOO!!! and re-downloaded Chrome. The virus returned immediately. I got rid of Chrome again. This time I re-downloaded Firefox. There was the virus again. Safari seems to be--at least in my case--the only browser that can withstand Search Baron/Bing. Unfortunately, I now have Safari 13 (the latest update), which cannot access Netflix or Amazon Prime Viewing. Again, I called Apple and asked "What's the big deal; why can't I get Netflix or Amazon Prime Viewing with Safari 13?" The Apple lady said "They're incompatible; try another browser like Chrome or Firefox." I told her my story and she basically said "You're out of luck." Yippee. Hope this helps at all.

I have the same issue. When I run a malware scan it always detects "OSX.Genieo." Every time I quarantine and delete the malware, it still is found in the next scan and my search engines still re-route through Search Baron!

Any other ideas? Mine does not show up in applications or activity. I have reset Chrome and Safari, but I'm still having no luck.
