DAT import to Logic Pro X (General questions on Sync and Start IDs)

I'm currently in the process of archiving some old (1991 being the oldest) DAT tapes.

Looking for some help and advice on how best to import them into Logic after a long night of googling/research (including this forum) which has produced a variety of conflicting reports.

I have a Tascam DA20 MKii that I am using to play the DATs through its Digital Coaxial output into my Mac. (Full chain: Tascam -> Digital Coaxial Cable -> Coaxial to Optical (TOSLINK) converter -> Optical Cable -> Sound Card -> USB to Mac).

When I have a tape at 48Khz, I set the sound card input via the Audio MIDI Setup utility to match as well as in Logic. If I have a tape at 44.1Khz - same process. This appears to be working correctly however every now and then I am getting small clicks. Some are "on the tape". I.e. when I play back via the analog output of the DAT machine, they are present at the same timecode - however some are not. The research I've done indicates its linked to the sync clock, but other posts have said as long as the sample rates match it makes no difference.

So - I have no idea which sync mode in logic to use for this to even give it a go.

In the recording project settings Synchronisation tab which setting should I change? I think it should be "Audio Sync Mode - Core Audio - External or Free" but I'm not sure and have no confidence that its working correctly? Would this sync the two machines and possibly prevent the random clicks?

Also on a separate note: Does anybody know how to get DAT tape Start IDs into logic? Is it even possible in logic?

I appreciate DAT is a dying (well dead from 2006) format, but any advice would be brilliant.

Thanks

So it came with no Mac Software or control panel and it's it's really old (and cheap)

The sound card needs to be able to sync the external Digital Clock from the DA-20. The reason you;re getting clicks is that no two digital clocks are the same. 44.100164 digital clock on one interface may be 44.1 010043 on another. the clicks are sync adjustments as something has to give. Also be sure you only have one cable out of the DA-20 to IN on the converter. Won't make a difference at this point.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm doing this project 'on the road' so I bought a cheap sound card off amazon that supported SPDIF Input:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/LEAGY-External-Surround-Recording-Compatible/dp/B07DGR9M6M/ref=pd_rhf_dp_p_img_6?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=8BBFGA1HKQ36T17EMQ1G

Going from your comment I went to the Audio MIDI Setup and found that the Clock Source is locked to "Default" with no option to change it.

I assume this means that for me to get sync-clock locked and remove the occasional clicks I will need to get a different audio interface.

My original intention was to buy this: https://focusrite.com/audio-interface/scarlett/scarlett-8i6 as it has SPDIF in via COAXIAL (and therefore not need for the Coaxial to Optical converter). Having just looked through the manual for it, it allows external clock sync over SPDIF. However the reason I didn't get this is because it increases the budget on this project by a reasonable amount.

"S/He who buys cheap buys twice".

In summary - I just need a sound card/interface in which I can sync the clock to the DAT machine. Once that is done I don't need to fiddle with Logic (other than ensure the correct inputs are selected).

Thanks again for your help.
