Hi cosng114,

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities. I understand you're running into an issue using Portrait mode on your iPhone XS, and I'm glad to see how I can assist.

As a test, are you able to apply the same lighting effect on a portrait photo you've already taken? You'll find the steps below: Use Portrait mode on your iPhone

"You can also change the Portrait Lighting effect of any Portrait mode photo that you've already taken:

  1. Open the Photos app, then select the Portrait mode photo that you want to change.
  2. Tap Edit. Lighting effects appear in the bottom part of the photo.
  3. Swipe the lighting effects to choose the one you want.
  4. Tap Done."

If this doesn't help, try to Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch and test again. Does that help?

As another possibility, which iOS version are you using under Settings > General > About. If you need to update to iOS 12.4.1, here's How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch and Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

I hope this helps. Take care.
