Airplay Thinks My HomePod is a TV

My HomePod works very well with my iPad (on which it was setup). I stream TV from my local cable provider to watch TV on my iPad. I prefer to listen to the audio of the TV on my HomePod and watch video on my iPad rather than listen on speakers in my iPad. When I Airplay the audio from the TV app to the HomePod I get the audio on the HomePod just fine. However, the video on the iPad freezes with the message "Playing on Your TV". It is like Airplay thinks the HopePod is a TV. What am I doing wrong?

There was a time I could airplay from my tv app right onto Apple TV, but it changed. The idea is they don’t want you sharing your login details with someone who isn’t paying for cable, as this gives them free access to watch on Apple TV. So they block airplay.

netflix has also blocked airplay now. If you don’t see the little airplay button on the screen, it’s not allowed. Trying to bypass it from the control Center simply doesn’t work, but it used to. You might get audio but no picture or vice versa.

The App Store reviews for your app. might tell you if airplay is blocked. People complain “no airplay”.

Could it be a "mirroring" problem? I am thinking that I might set Airplay up to mirror what is playing on the iPad. This would play the TV streaming app identically on both the iPad and the HomePod....even though the HomePod is not a video device. Problem is that I don't know how to set the mirroring settings in iOS. Do it all the time on my MacBook Pro. Can anyone advise?

Thanks. I have gotten this message as well when I try to Airplay with a friend's out-of-state cable provider. I think this is, as you say, a licensing issue. My message is different. The odd thing is that is worked just fine until a month ago and then the problem arose. This makes me think it is a setup problem or, and this would be bad, the problem is with the cable providers (rather poor) streaming app.

Thanks much. Tried this but no change. On the basis of your previous post I also tried disconnecting my Apple TV box from the network. Again, no change.

Something is amiss here. I am going to talk to the cable provider (Spectrum) about the behavior of their streaming app. Everything worked fine until about a month ago. I suspect they updated the app and that is when things went awry.
