My iMac 27” late 2012 will not start

Yesterday I walked away from my computer while erasing the cache of my chrome browser. When I came back to the computer today there was a window saying had completed the erase but the computer was frozen and I had to hold down the power button to restart. Now I can not restart my computer.

When I start regularly I get stuck on an endless progress bar that I let run for over 10 min (usually my computer starts in under 45 sec).

I can start up in recovery mode and I ran the disk utility with no issues found.

If I try to start up the apple hardware test I get an error that says after it tries briefly to connect to the internet I get an error message

Error; Cannot load ‘EFI/Drivers/TestSupport.efi’

When I tried to start up in “safe mode” I got the apple logo and then a circle with a diagonal line through it.

Any help anyone can provide, I really do not want to have to take it into the appple store.

Thanks

I ended up taking it into the apple store. My hard drive had failed. They replaced it. Sadly this is the second time I have had to replace my hard drive in under a year. Apple replaced it for me last Nov (2018). Unfortunately the hard drives are only warranted for 90 days. Still cheaper than a new computer. Hopefully I can get a few more years out of her.

Thanks for the replies

Does the progress bar move at all during the 10+ minutes of waiting? If you're not sure, mark the progress bar location with a Post-It note or something similar and check back after 15 or more minutes. It's possible your system is running a file system consistency check and you just need to wait longer, especially if it is finding issues.

You didn't mention what version of macOS you are running. Take a look at this article to see whether you are able to boot into one of the recovery modes. Once in recovery mode you can verify the disk health using Disk Utility, and if it is good, you can reinstall macOS. If the hard drive has hardware issues you'll probably need to take it in for replacement.

Please do the following:

  • If both fail, attempt to restart in the Recovery Partition (Command + R on startup) , open Disk Utility and run First Aid on the internal drive. If you cannot then you must go to your local AASP to get the computer repaired.

I, am so overwhelmed,on this issue

The experts on this community will have an, Recovery Partition,(command+R on Statup).?

I am, learning day by day.....................................?

But the Post-it note,i never heard before?

I have the same issue with High Sierra on the Process Bar,not running to the end,and stuck half ways?

But after several post here on this community, its been better with Mac OS Mojave!

I was able to reset the NVRAM, I think. I got the 2 chimes but then it starts into recovery mode. I ran the disk utility (again) and still got no errors.

However I can not start, even in safe mode. The progress bar eventually gets all the way to the end but I never get out of the progress bar screen.

Sadly I think I am bound for my apple Genius Bar appointment tomorrow.

Thanks
