'Edit/Speech/Start Speaking' does not work
This feature, which I relied heavily upon with my old Mac has not worked since purchase of my new MacBook OS Mojave 10.14.6. Does anybody have a quick fix? Thx.

FWIW, Firefox doesn't support "Start Speaking". However, Chrome does and it's working for me. You are selecting the text I assume?
Assuming it still works in Safari and other Apple apps, then your Chrome install needs reinstalled.
See if it works in a new user account.
Yes, I remembered that after I posted, sorry. Try a new user account.
In what app? It works with most Apple apps. Safari, TextEdit, etc.
Things you can try…
Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac - Apple Support
How to reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support
If neither works, post an EtreCheck report for analysis.
Use the additional text icon under the reply window to paste in the report.
.....But it doesn't work in Safari either.
I reset the NVRAM (??) and it did not correct the problem. I did not find anything called PRAM so I didn't do that. I found instructions about resetting the SMC but it spoke about opening up the computer, etc. No way!! I'd have to take it in to Apple Store for that. I am sure I'd destroy my new computer.
I usually use Chrome. I have tried in Safari also, and it does not work. Also tried in Firefox and the 'Start Speaking' command does not appear in the drop down list under 'Edit'.
Yes, I am selecting the text first.
Unfortunately, it did not work when I tried using different user account.
I will do an etrecheck next, but can't take any more time just now. Will be back with the etre report when I can find a bit of time to work further on this. Thank you!
I hope I did the correctly.
Thank you Luis S. I did all steps in the instructions given. Edit/Speech still does not work.
When you see "PRAM", read "NVRAM". Older macs had PRAM ("Parameter RAM"); more recent ones have NVRAM (NonVolatile RAM). Even the keys you press to reset NVRAM reveal that history: Command+Option+P+R (where do you think the P and R come from? yes!)
Resetting SMC does NOT involve opening up your mac.
