Why does my ipad air shut down unexpectedly and show no battery and then later it starts up with battery % back to normal

Have you tried a hard reset of your iPad by holding down both the Home and sleep/wake buttons simultaneously until your iPad goes to black and restarts with Apple logo, then release the buttons?
All of this maybe an indicator of a failing battery.
Suggest bringing your iPad Air into your nearest, “local” Apple Store for diagnosis, evaluation and potential options.
