External hard drive does not show up and after doing a backup I unplug the drive and get an error message to eject the drive before removing or powering down the drive
Maybe i can help. Under Finder, then Preferences, then show connected hard drives/ cd’s dvd’s/ iPods/ etc. Should be a bunch of checkboxes there. The drive should now show up on your desktop and option clicking on it/left clicking on it, should bring up the ‘ eject’ choice. Feel free to do so. Wait a bit until the drive disappears from the desktop and then unplug it

Never unplug a drive without ejecting it first without shutting it down.
I know that the drive must be shut down before removing it but how do I do that when it does not show up any where. The drive is plugged into a USB port.
