External hard drive does not show up and after I have done a backup I unplug the drive and get an error message to eject the drive before removing or powering down.

Maybe i can help. Under Finder, then Preferences, then show connected hard drives/ cd’s dvd’s/ iPods/ etc. Should be a bunch of checkboxes there. The drive should now show up on your desktop and option clicking on it/left clicking on it, should bring up the ‘ eject’ choice. Feel free to do so. Wait a bit until the drive disappears from the desktop and then unplug it
