i cant add a ios7 user to imessage on a iphone 6s

My newest apple product that supports iMessage is a ios7 iPhone 4. I can still send Messages but my friend cannot add me into a group chat. I know my device is a fossil and iMessages standards probably have changed since then but is there a way for me to join the group chat?
