target display mode doesn't work

My mac makes a sound and doesn't do anything when I press command-f2 even when the cable is connected.

iMac Line (2012 and Later)

Problems turning of Target Display Mode on iMac I'm connecting my macbook air to a late 2013 21.5inch iMac in target display mode, using the iMac as a display. The iMac works fine as a display, but when I try to turn target display mode off (command-F2, or unplugging the cable), the iMac screen goes black or fuzzy, and I can't use the iMac unless I restart it. Any advice?

2017 Intel iMac stopped detecting Studio Display I have a 2017 Intel iMac w/Studio Display attached. No problems with Studio under MacOs 12 and now 13.1. Used it several hours today but this evening, the system woke up from sleep and did not detect the Studio. Power is good and I swapped Thunderbolt cables, but the system still does not detect the external display. Ideas?

Target Display Mode not working It feels like I have read all the threads on this, but have not come to a solution. Problem: All I can get the iMac to do when pressing Cmd+F2 is either to make an error sound or to flash (in Safe Mode). Setup: . MacBook Pro 13" 2020, macOS 10.15.7 (Catalina) as source . iMac 27" late 2012, macOS 10.13.6 (High Sierra) as target . Thunderbolt 3 (Usb‑C) to Thunderbolt 2 adaptor . Apple Thunderbolt cabel I have: . started both machines in Safe Mode . tried resetting the PRAM/NVRAM on both computers . reset SMC on iMac . tried connecting in iMac lock screen . reconnected cables (to different ports) I am lost. Any suggestions are welcome. Best, Nils

No idea what Mac you have or which Mac you are using as the target display.

it's a Imac 21.5 inch, late 2013

Nowhere on the page I linked does it say you can use an HDMI cable.
