iphone 5 is disabled connect to itunes

Tried the instructions provided by Apple i.e. switch off device then hold the home button while plugging in the usb cable. iTunes shows "iTunes could not connect to the iphone because it is locked with a passcode..... And the iphone still showing iphone is disabled connect to itunes. Help!

I have finally cracked it. This is what I did. Connect the iphone 5 to a charger. Press power and home button to power it off. Keep holding both the buttons until the apple logo appear then release the power button but keep holding the home button. Voila! the recovery screen appears. Unplug the usb cable and plug in to a computer with iTunes. Then the options for recovery and updates appears. Proceed as per instructions. I had to repeat the above after the recovery.
