Is there a shortcut to switch to last active window without bringing all application windows to front?
Currently the only way to switch to last window is to click it with a mouse. Very annoying.
Perhaps is is possible to creata a custom shortcut with apple script or similar?
Within an app, cmd-` will switch between windows, and it switches in reverse order of usage. So if you are talking about within an app, that will do what you want.
Cmd-Tab does the same with Apps, but not necessarily that order.
ctrl-F4 will go to next active window. But it doesn't seem I don't know how it determines the order it cycles.
I figured you were bouncing between apps, which doesn't seem to have an equivalent.
Cmd-tab should go to the previous app, and the last active window for that app. Is it not doing that?
I tend to work with a lot of windows opened. Frequently I need to access last window in focus.
For example I need to copy a pease of code found in a browser. Cmd - Tab will bring all Safari windows. Some times they are covering all the screen.

Yes, Cmd-tab will bring previous app and unfortunately all also it's windows to front. I want to bring just one window, without obstructing previous app.
I tend to work with two different apps opened frequently. And most of the time it is not a problem. I just click previous window to bring it to front. The other times it takes more than one click. It should be possible to use a keyboard short cut.
I got this habit from windows 7, there alt-tab behaves differently. After 5 years on the mac I still miss this feature
Two ideas:
-you can try split screen for working with two windows, each from a different application
-you can use Mission Control and put any windows you like in separate desktops-possibly in full screen. Note that each full screen window gets its own separate desktop so this will be closer to what you are used to.
EDIT: other useful shortcuts are control-right and control-left arrow to switch to other desktops. Turn off “rearrange spaces ...” in System Preferences->Mission Control so they keep their relative positions over time.
