Screen time limits not working

My daughters screentime is limited to 2 hours all apps and categories per day.

However she manages to run up 5 hours per day anyway... mostly snapchat and instagram.

i thought the 2 hours was culminative limit. Am I wrong? If not, how is she doing it?

The glitch seems to be related to Downtime and App Limit running at the same time. My daughter said that if she didn't use all her app limit when downtime hit, after midnight a screen would pop up that said 5 more mins, 15 more minutes, use for the rest of the day. She could set the apps to use for rest of day (since 12:01am is a new day!) and it was a free for all. I took away downtime and now the app limits are back to requesting a passcode to approve more time. It is disappointing that we cannot use downtime at the same time but at least there is somewhat of an answer. Hopefully apple will fix this on the next update.

Hi - I have had the same problem. And I am sure there is a proper solution. But I use a quick handy hack - in Content & Privacy Restrictions ...

in Allowed Apps - toggle off all the apps (you can toggle them on individually eg camera - or at end of screen time toggle all of them back on)

additionally in Content Restrictions (next one down) go to Apps (and either use 4+ or Dont Allow Apps and they will vanish off your childs phones (just hidden from the home screen not deleted!). Later you can put them back by ticking the appropriate age.

I found this hack covers most apps, but not Phone unfortunately or iMessage.

I hope this helps

It is evident that Apple hasn't made any effort in making Screen Time work properly

Meanwhile go to Settings, them to Screen Time, on the daily usage breakdown check the MOST USED apps. Here you can click on the apps your kids are using more often and add them to the apps you want to block after the allowed Screen Time

This way you can block apps and website that you cannot block on the original Screen Time settings

Hope this help

Try this solution. It worked for me when I had the same issue. I got from a “parents & tech” group on Facebook.

Repeatedly and in no specific order made sure all devices (his and mine) were fully updated. Apparently his was 1 update behind. Turned off Screen Time on both devices. Restarted both devices (probably this combination about 3 times total). On mine. Then his. Then both. Then just mine again. Then his. It made no sense; I just kept doing it and rebooting. Finally, through the magic of the Apple gods, something I did with the update, reboots, and Screen Time off then on everything somehow synced. 🙌

I have that same problem on my son's school iPad. Google chrome, photos and the YouTube app are working while the remaining apps are dark and say the limit has been reached. Looking further under utilities, I see these same three apps are showing up when I look at Siri & Search. These three are "suggested shortcuts". I wonder if there is a link here that he is using to get around screen time.

Apple? Are you guys working on this?? It is pretty clear that there is an issue and that your ScreenTime utility is not working as planned. Ironically, it seems that some software providers have figured out a way around Apple iOS which I thought was pretty bulletproof up until now.

Specifically it seems that Facebook and it's related companies and social media apps are a couple of steps ahead of you guys.

When leveraging ScreenTime and its downtime and app limit functions a majority of the apps on my child's phone perform as expected and are not available to her per the settings except for Instagram, Snapchat and Tiktok. These 3 apps are today's most populate and distracting apps for our kids. Furthermore a super easy work around to the downtime feature is to simply fool the system by changing the date/time to a value beyond the limitation.

Net/net I've never been disappointed in Apple's products, features and solutions. I've always held a high regard for the standard that you guys have upheld throughout the years. ScreenTime is a VERY important utility given today's modern society. It allows parent to help our children manage themselves but unfortunately this is the first function from Apple that feels pretty half-baked.

And yes I've reset all devices, ensure latest OS, bla bla.... I've probably donated 5-10 hours of my life trying to troubleshoot this for you. There is a glitch and it needs to be fixed else I will need to consider competing products during our next technology refresh.

Please get on this ASAP!

There are at least two topics in this thread, that I can see. First, the one that I think OP was asking about. Is it possible that all limits are per application? Meaning, a 1-hour limit is actually 1 hour for each app in the category? I don't think it was always this way but it is definitely like this now (or it seems it is). I can't find anywhere to enforce an overall limit in ios 13.

Second, there was mention of a 30min limit but more than that actually used. I am not sure I've ever seen this but it sounds like a bug....

Another frustrated parent here!!!

For the last 2 weeks I have been thinking it was either me not setting it up correctly or that my kids were just one step ahead of me. Turns out it neither...the feature is flawed and just doesn't wo as intended.

Also seems that Apple aren't listening to anyone about it because f they wwere, then maybe they might like to let people know that they are working on a solution so we can at least know we are being heard.

I have two boys 14/16. One works and one doesn’t. It must be something about the app itself and the downloading. I tried powering on/off or turning settings on/off. Sometimes that used to help. All phones updated iOS. Maybe my changes again need to happen tomorrow. Usually I could get app limit to work instantaneously but not for Instagram Snapchat or Clash Royale. Hmmmmm Other kid is fine. I initially found some shortcuts disguised as same app and allowing it. Weird. But maybe this boy found a workaround.
