Apple email or fraud?

I recently got email purportedly from Apple, telling me there is a problem with my iCloud account. It provided a link to access the site to correct the problem. Instead of going to the link, I went to Settings on my iPhone. My iCloud appeared to be working just fine. Was this email a fraud? How does Apple communicate if there is a problem?

It was a scam. Apple will notify you of a problem when you attempt to log in.
