Not correct.

Apple will give you a gift card you can use towards a purchase at any time in the future. There is no requirement you buy a new iPhone immediately during trade in.

Depends on the level of damage.

Apple may give you some value for it in the form of an Apple gift card if its not completely beyond repair. But how much will depend on how much damage it has.

But they will not give you actual cash at all, they only give you Apple Gift Cards with the value of your device.
