How to display app labels in the dock in iOS 12?

Is there any way to get back the labels in the dock?

I'm setting up an iPhone for a senior citizen and I'm trying to make it as easy as possible. His eyes naturally gravitate towards the icons at the bottom so that's where I'd like to put the most useful apps. Unfortunately, if I do, they lose their labels and he won't know what they're for.

So I put them at the top instead and put the rest in the dock. Sure enough, when he looked at the new layout, his eyes went straight to the dock and, because there are no labels, he asked, "What are they for?"

So I'd really like to have those labels back.
