shut down and disconnect all external devices except OEM mouse and keyboard
reset the smc

reset the nvram

boot into recovery mode

bring up disk utility
select your boot drive and click "First Aid"
if repairs are needed the utility should make them. if there are problems that can not be fixed there is a more serious problem.
boot into safe mode
Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support
then reboot normally with everything except OEM mouse and keyboard disconnected

Interesting. As soon as I disconnected my backup disk everything works great. I guess I will buy a new backup disk.
Before trashing the disk, try an alternate cable. Sometimes the cable fails. It should be an easy test, assuming you have a similar cable you can experiment with.
Great idea. I will do that. The problem is that this uses a special cable - at least on the disk end. I may have another, but if not, a replacement 3 TB disk is only $90.
Just a note, 3 TB Disks are the shortest lived of all sizes.
I just realized what I ordered was a 4 TB WD Elements drive. The previous one was 3 TB an lasted many years.
