How do I know if I need additional icloud storage? What exactly am I paying extra for?

Extra iCloud storage gives you extra space for your backups, documents, photos. Whether you need extra storage only you will know e.g. do you backup to the cloud, do you take a lot of photos and do you include them in the backup ?
