MacCleaner Scam

Hi,

Recently I have had intermittent popups and tabs opening claiming my mac is infected with viruses.

I know this is an old subject but I still cannot find a really useful way of ridding myself of this adware.

I always end up with a macCleaner.dmg in my download folder and I assume that nobody write viruses and malware to promote somebody else's software. I tried to contact MacCleaner at their published mail address but as expected my mail came back with invalid address. I would actually be prepared to put money on their heads because they are really the scum of the earth.

But back to the problem.

Most stuff I have found to rid one of this problem, such as malWareBytes just leads to the next scam where you will be expected to pay to rid yourself of what is an illegal scam. Basically sub-scammers.

Surely there must be a way of cleaning out the various plist, launch daemons these criminals install without paying these parasites to do it.

Can somebody help me?

TIA

-Paul-

ps. I really am prepared to rid the earth of these parasites and to make an example of them.

There is, and it's simple. The solution follows the format of this Discussion, among others: Runaway Process - SearchBrowserSky.

If you need specific guidance for your particular circumstances though, please write back.

As long as there are gullible humans to feed upon, those parasites will always be among us. However, you never have to download or install anything, pay, or otherwise grow dependent upon any "sub-scammers". The free market is certain to create opportunists seeking to capitalize on the misery of others. It makes the world go 'round. The point is you don't have to play that game. Of course you can if you wish. It's up to you.

Read Effective defenses against malware and other threats, which can be summarized in the four words "think before you click."

I have tried several adware cleaners including MalWareBytes and none of them seem to work.

Uninstall anything and everything you installed in an effort to eradicate whatever it was you installed to begin with.

I appreciate the advice here but surely there is a way of removing this adware stuff.

Once again, please refer to the Discussion I linked earlier. It serves to outline the general steps required to remove the adware stuff.

Do not download anything.

Do not install anything.

You don't need to.

If that does not describe the goal you sought to achieve in your original post, then please explain what it is.

I would be very surprised if the developers of this app were located in Germany. Please understand that there are many “Mac cleaners” out there. There is really no way to tell where your “macCleaner.dmg” file came from. The sad fact is that pretty much anyone can throw an ad up on the internet saying “Speed up your Mac with Mac Cleaner”. What you actually download is anyone’s guess.

I read the stuff you recommended but it is almost only what one should not do to avoid getting adware. I am extremely careful about any downloads. Always turn down upgrades (some are faked) for flash and so on.

Several people say one needs to look at the activity monitor for tasks you haven't installed. But with several hundred tasks, mainly with cryptic names it is impossible to judge what is legal and what is scam.

I was loathe to download malWareBytes and don't trust them either.

What I don't understand is that nobody has requested prosecution of MacCleaner. They are obviously the perpetrators. Nobody writes adware to promote other people's stuff.

As far as I can see the culprit in my case is somewhere in the configuration of Safari. I killed / deinstalled Safari as far as I can tell (app and application support) but on reinstalling the situation seems to be slightly better but not perfect.

Any concrete suggestions where to look?

Any concrete suggestions where to look?

For the third time: Refer to the Discussion I linked earlier.

The reason I have responded to you in that manner is that following instructions is a prerequisite for my continued interest in helping you fix your Mac. Repeating myself wastes my time and yours. If you can't follow instructions you won't be able to fix your Mac, and you will forever remain subservient to the "sub-scammers."

Best wishes.

Thanks for the info. I think the develop menu was something I had not thought about. I have done what you suggest and hope it will clear things up. The problem with previous suggestions was that they assume that you are looking for a particular scam program such as SearchBrowserSky. Also I don't have the time to spend hours, maybe even days looking through all the tasks on my machine which is why I posted here hoping somebody had some current information which could solve my problem. Those people who spend their time doing system admin are far more acquainted with the names of apps and spawned apps which will be running under a huge OS like Mojave. For someone like me who is just interested in developing application software I don't care about the underlying stuff. It should be like a toaster. Switch on and use it.

Again many thanks and I will get back when I see that the problem has gone away.

Why shouldn't they be based in Germany. It certainly looks to me as though they may be. If so it would be a huge advantage because the German legal system would make it fairly simple to finish them off once and for ever. The only case I know where somebody was actually prosecuted and had enormous civil proceedings which will have broken him for the rest of his life was the young guy from Hamburg who had written a virus. Not sure what it was called but it was in the press all over the world at the time.

I sometimes delete the Safari folder in my home directory's Library folder (e.g. rm -rf ~/Library/Safari). This seems to clear all the cache and history etc. On relaunch Safari recreates this folder and sets up my previously saved bookmarks from iCloud.
