Manage Your Data in Safe Mode:

Use Safe Mode to manage and transfer this data.

  1. boot into Safe Mode (Hold Down: Shift immediately after boot > release Shift at login screen)
  2. Plug in an external storage device
  3. Transfer data to the device
  4. Remove Files that are not necessary (full movies take up 2-3GB of storage space).

This is what happens if you do not maintain a minimum of 10 - 15 GB of empty space. Your computer and OS need some space to operate efficiently and, as you have learned, if the disk becomes full, it will stop working.

You will need to try to access your hard disk either by booting into an external bootable clone of your system, or you can try and see if you can boot into Recovery to try to delete enough to be able to boot and then go about deleting some space hogging files/movies/videos. Once you are in recovery mode (boot with Command + R keys), see if you can delete items or, you may need to use Disk Utility and erase your entire disk. You can then reinstall the OS and then transfer files from your backup.

Please do NOT use any clean my Mac apps - they will not be helpful and may make things worse.
