Hello,
While I cannot speak directly about the hardware you are using I can relay something from my own experience. I am able to use my Apple AirPods, which use Bluetooth 4.0, with my iPhone 3G S, which uses Bluetooth 2.1. While the connection isn’t as clear as it is from one of my newer Apple devices, it does work well enough. Most likely this will be your findings as well.
Most headphones are backwards compatible, but you may not get the same performance you would from the headphones with a more modern Bluetooth receiver.
