After migration, passwords do not work to login into accounts

I migrated to a new Mac. Now mine and my daughters passwords will not work. They still work on the old Mac. What do I do?

Well, it appears that for the moment the new Mac is totally useless, as you or your daughter can't log in at all -- is that correct?

Have you tried booting the new Mac in Recovery mode (hold down Command+r during startup), then opening a Terminal window from the Utilities menu, then type the following command in the Terminal window:

resetpassword

This will open another window where you can click one of the accounts (you need to make sure that the account you're resetting is an "admin" type account) and then enter the new password in the subsequent dialog and enter the same password in the box labeled "Verify Password" -- make sure to type the same thing twice. Then click the "Next" icon and then click the "Restart" icon on the next screen. The computer should reboot and now you should be able to login to the computer using the account you just reset the password for. If that works fine, use the "Users & Groups" System Preferences pane to reset the password for the second account. Ask for more details if you need help with that.

Hope that helps...here is a link to a YouTube video that goes through these steps if you wish to see more details https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8aRVPcP4CA

Good luck...

Hello NormN1,

Thank you for the post. I see you're not able to log in to migrated user accounts on a new Mac, and I have a resource that should help. I recommend starting with the steps below: Change or reset the password of a macOS user account

"If you don't remember your password, or it isn't working, you might be able to reset it using one of the methods described below. But first try these simpler solutions:

  • Make sure that you're typing the correct uppercase or lowercase characters. If your keyboard has Caps Lock turned on, the password field shows a Caps Lock symbol .
  • If the password field shows a question mark, click it to display a password hint that might help you to remember.
  • Try to log in without a password. If that works, you can then add a password by following the steps to change your password.
  • Try to log in with the Apple ID password that you use for iCloud. If you just changed that password and the new password isn't working, try the old password first. If that works, you should be able to use the new password from then on."

I hope this helps. If not, check out the link I posted above for steps on resetting the password to see if that clears things up.

Take care.

Did you use the Migration Assistant to move all your old user files from old mac to new mac? Did that all work OK or were there any problems with this part of the setup?

If they don't work at all how are you logging in to the new Mac to even try Safari and iCloud or use it at all?

Need more info to give more advice.

Good luck...
