Microsoft Word for Mac

Hey guys,

I'm EXTREMELY new to apple & MacBooks (got this MacBook maybe 3 weeks ago). I just downloaded Word and when I tried to go to a new blank document it says "You can't make this change because the selection is locked" I looked up fixes on Google and Youtube, but they're all for Windows. I have a paper due next week that requires Word specific documents. ANY help would be appreciated.

Also, I've had Office 360 on my old laptop that was downloaded from the Microsoft site for students. If that helps any.
