How do i make Time Machine Available Over Wifi

I've been researching all day can can't seem to figure this out. When I connect my External hard drive to y router in finder I have to connect to the server, it doesn't just see the device. How can I use the SSD I have connected to router as a Time Machine device? My router is a D-Link and MacBook Pro 2018

Configure time machine for a network drive Have spent considerable time trying configure Time Machine to run on a network drive. It always fails when I use get to the stage of tmutil setdestination. I suspect the problem is something to do with the formatting of the network drive, but I am not savvy enough to figure it out. Can someone point me to instructions that are suitable for Big Sur for formatting network drive and configuring it for Time Machine?

Time machine doesn't see my network drive I have an old MacbookPro from 2012 and I could get Time Machine to work on it successfully. It currently backs up to a network drive (exFAT format) connected through my router. I have a new MacBook Pro recently purchased. I was able to access the network drive and manually put files in there via SMB. However, the Time Machine can't see that I have a connected and working network drive. It informs that I do not have a suitable Time Machine destination. Would appreciate if anyone has a solution to this.

The configuration is not supported by Time Machine.

If you manage to get it to backup, you will have constant problems and restoring might not be possible.

OK, looks like Barney has the Answer. :)

There are ways you might backup over a network, but restoring over a Network won't work, as Barney mentions.

If you want to try over the Network...

Carbon Copy Cloner...
