How do I fix the location of where screen capture pictures go? Ive tried to use terminal "defaults write com.apple.screencapture location ~/Desktop" without any error yet it doesn't work. I can't find where my captures are going currently either.
Open the new Screenshot.app that is in your Applications/ Utilities folder from there use the Options button and you can nominate the locations for your screenshots without using Terminal.

Desktop is usually the default location for screenshots. The Terminal command you used actually didn't change anything. Where do you exactly want to save your screenshots?
Try to include the complete destination path. In the following example it's set to save in Pictures folder inside Bob's home folder:
defaults write com.apple.screencapture location /Users/Bob/Pictures
As a little addition to Eau Rouge’s advice: you can launch the Screen Shots application with the shortcut Command-Shift-5.
