I am transferring the time machine backup from a 1 TB external drive to a 5 TB external drive. Finder has been "preparing" files for several days (over 900,000) so far. How long does this process take?
The drives are connected to a 2013 21 inch iMac. 3.1 GHz i7 with 16 GB RAM.
Any suggestions on how to speed it up?
Moving large amount of data from external to external is the bottleneck. In essence the system has to read from one drive and write to the other. Plus USB 2.0 drives which are OK for Time Machine, are much slower than USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt drives.
Thanks, that is the article I used to start the transfer. It doesn't say anything about how long the transfer will take. The process is much slower than I expected.
