I started the update on my iPhone XsMAX with the latest update. I started it at 6:20 AM and it is now 11:24 AM and the phone STILL has the apple logo on it. 5 HOURS?!?!?! What on earth is in this update? Gold?

When you see the Apple logo means it is in recovery mode and it's not updating, it will be forever if you left it that way.

Cancel the download and try again.
Wi-Fi is required and if it shows as slow again you should use iTunes to update the software.
Thank you, thank you. This process worked. I had to hold buttons several times to even get it in to recovery mode. I am a more visual person so I googled for youtube videos and found a few. My phone was so stubborn. And since I back up to the iCloud and not iTunes I was concerned about how was I going to get all of my apps back onto my phone.
Between this phone getting stuck, me getting frustrated, my doing google research and retrying, retrying, retrying...this whole process took 24 HOURS. I know that this will be an ongoing problem and I am disappointed with Apple for giving us a "fix" without really telling us how to prevent this problem in the first place. Good medicine is preventative not reparitory.
But I thank you for finding this "fix" for me.
Thank you for your response. I had to first figure out how to get rid of that apple logo so that I could restart the phone. Wasn't easy.
