CURSOR/KEYBOARD KEEP FREEZING

I have a Mac OS Mojave 10.14.6 early 2015. Roughly 3 weeks ago the cursor began to freeze in the upper-left corner on the login page, this has happened 4 times. I was able to fix the first 3 times by shutting my Mac off, then turning it back on while holding down the caps lock until the login screen appeared. I had to do this 2-3 times before it worked. On September 12, 2019 it happened a fourth time and again was able to fix by repeating above steps a few times. After it was fixed I installed the most recent update and immediately on restart the cursor was frozen but now the problem and solution have changed.

The caps lock key no longer works as a solution, but holding the spacebar to enter in Safe Mode works but not always. The update was done, the cursor was "fixed" and I was back to using my Mac, then the cursor and keyboard froze. This was the first time the cursor froze during use along with the keyboard. I couldn't use control, alt, esc and I had to hold down the Power button to shutdown my Mac. I tried to reboot in Safe Mode several times and it didn't work. As well as trying the caps lock key, resetting PRAM, SMC several times each off and on over a 5 hour period. Then today I turned my Mac on in Safe Mode and it worked on the first shot!

Can anyone tell me why this is happening? Why did the original issue started as stated in the first paragraph? Why I'm having a different issue now? Also why doesn't the solution fix the problem the first time? How can I prevent this from happening again? I'm so confused.

Thanks I will take the steps you've suggested, especially since it happened again since my post. In my original post I wrote that I have a Mac OS Mojave 10.14.6 early 2015. Originally I was able to fix the cursor by holding down the caps lock+power and it worked the 3 times it happened but stopped after the last update. I found this solution from a previous discussion years back. I tried to fix the cursor multiple times again this last episode and this time I was able to fix it by doing the SMC, shift+control+option+power, Safe Mode didn't work this time. Thanks for your suggestions and I hope one of them will resolve the issue completely. I'll keep you posted.

I've not heard of the Caps-Lock way of startup on Mac systems -- perhaps you mean Shift or ??? What kind of a Mac is this? How old is it? How were you doing the SMC and PRAM resets?

Here is a summary of startup modes on Mac systems:

I would suggest perhaps blowing out the crud in your keyboard with one of those cans of compressed air or maybe a visit to Apple store to let them look at the system. Also try a Google search for "mac xxx keyboard problems" where xxx is MacBook or mac mini or iMac or whatever you have. Certain MacBook models have keyboard problems that have been well documented and in fact I think Apple is offering free repairs on certain models - check with them to see if your model is included in this group.

Good luck...
