Black Screen of Death - MacBook Pro 2016/2017 Mojave 10.14.6
After being a Mac user for many years, I finally experienced the black screen of death. Upon startup, there was no Apple logo as the computer booted. At first, it appeared that my screen remained black and would not display anything. In the right lighting, however, I noticed that the display was faintly visible. I used a cell phone flashlight app to shine on my screen and could vaguely make out my login screen. I typed the first letter of my user name and then entered my password and hit enter. This logged me into my account and I could then slowly navigate the screen when I was able to locate my cursor.
At first, I tried running disk utility to see if it could fix the problem. I then moved onto the display settings to see if dimming or autodimming was an issue. I tried rebooting in safe mode and recovery mode as well as resetting NVRAM, SMC, etc. None of these boot options fixed the problem. After hours of troubleshooting, I discovered something I hadn't expected. When I open my screen to a full 90 degree angle or tilt it to its furthest extension, my screen is black from the start. When I keep my screen at a 45 degree angle or less and attempt to start my machine, my screen works! I wanted to share this information because this may hold true for others experiencing this problem. I'm going to have to see an Apple technician to further troubleshoot the problem, but I can at least access my data and back it up before making a trip to the tech store. This way, if they need to do a reinstall, my data will be covered.
What do you think is causing this issue? Hope this thread is helpful.
