Apple Watch Heart Rate Notification

I have enabled high heart rate notifications on my Apple Watch Series 2, but I have never received a notification despite my heart rate being elevated above my set threshold for longer than 10 minutes. My watch and iPhone are up to date in terms of operating systems. The only issue I can think of is that I put my watch in airplane mode when I wear it to bed. Could this be preventing the notifications?
