MS Word for Mac - page numbers not working

My (office 365) Word is version 16.13.1

Mac is Mojave 10.14.6

I have had intermittent issues with inserting page numbers into my papers. I get the box to open, select my preferences (rt. top, no first page) and lately nothing happens 100% of the time. I've also tried going in through the headers menu and still nothing. I successfully used page numbers last week, but none of the papers I've done this week have had it work. I can't tell if it's connected to using the abbreviated title in the header or not - but I must write my thesis in APA style and both the header and page numbers are required. I have even tried using a downloaded APA thesis template and the page numbers disappear at some point as I write. Any advice? My professors aren't going to be patient for long.

I agree with Jimmy. As MS Office is not an Apple product and there are not as many Office users active here as one would think, MS Office questions posted in these forums tend to linger a long time before getting any kind of helpful response.

MS made their forums less user-friendly than before by making it harder to limit answers to Mac subjects, but it can be done when you know the trick, Start here:

Results in Office - Microsoft Community.

That will display this page header:

1) Use the “Office Topic” pull-down to select your Office app.

2) Limit answers to Mac topics with the “Office Sub-topic” pull-down.

3) If needed, use the “Show Filters” option to further narrow the results.

Everyone there is both and Office user and a Mac user, something you can't say about Apple's forums. I believe you will find the contributors there knowledgeable and very helpful.

Doesn't your school have a computer support center? Ask them.

Create a new account on your machine. See if problem persists. I this works, some preference got messed up.

Solutions with a hassle factor:

-- post question on microsoft site.

-- Complete document. Take to a friend with a working Word. Turn on page numbers.

-- try free beta version of macos. Don't up grade. try on separate disk.

FYI. When in crunch mode, don't change anything. You should not be running latest version of mojave. I'd be on High Sierra.

Word can be clumsy on Apple products. I have both 365 and Pages, Numbers, Keynote on my mac.

When I run into an issue with an MS product I usually turn to the Apple equivalent. The exception is outlook. Corporations and schools like to run Exchange servers, macOS mail can get weird with it.

Have you imported the document onto a machine running windows and office?
