Iphoto events showing only as dates after forced Photos migration with system upgrade

Dear all,

A long while ago my Mac Mini told me I had to upgrade my OS. I did, and then Iphoto was gone. I could only use Photos after that. After following the instructions to import my Iphoto libraries, all my events disappeared. From over 10 years of photos (probably around 60,000 photos). Instead, they are collected by date under the "Iphoto Events" tab in the Photos sidebar. I have spent the last years searching for a solution in the forums without any luck. I suspect it was just very unfortunate timing that I had to upgrade the OS, before Apple figured out all the issues with migration of Iphoto libraries to Photos.

I am unable to contact Apple for advice on this as we moved abroad and it does not give me the option to speak or write to anyone. Did anyone experience the same problem and is there a way to retrieve my Iphoto events please? I am also unable to re-purchase Iphoto because it is not available in the Itunes store I have access to (Luxemburg). Please please please can someone help. Thank you very much in advance.

Kind regards, Floris

Mac Mini 2010

OSX El Capitan version 10.11.6

PS Apple does not show my device from the options for posting in this forum for some reason

The application Photos does not have the concept of Events. During the migration of an iPhoto library to a Photos library, Photos creates an Album in Folder "iPhoto Events", as you noticed. That's as close to "retrieve my events" as Photos can do. I think that would be the same no matter which version of Photos was used.

The final version of iPhoto (9.6.1) should still run in El Capitan; it even runs in Mojave. If you didn't have that version, we would normally tell you to get it from your previous purchases, but your move across countries may have made that impossible.

The "Moments" in Photos are replacing the events. The difference between Moments and Events is, that the Moments are created automatically, based on the location and the dates, and we cannot give them a custom name. You should now have a Moment for all photos, that have been taken at the same place and the same time. Related Moments are grouped as Collections.

You cannot get the old events back, as Mark explained. Photos tries to mimic them as albums, but the descriptions of the events will be lost. You may want have a look at OT's user tip: Moments in Photos are the New Events - Apple Community

If your iPhoto version has been removed, when you updated, you may not have been running iPhoto 9.6.1 but an older version. The update to iPhoto 9.6.1 has only been possible, if you owned an AppStore version of iPhoto, not a version installed from an iLife CD.

Dear Mark, thanks for taking the time to respond. I had hoped there would be a solution for this to be honest, as I expect it would have affected many people. I understand that if I do manage to purchase iPhoto again, then I can probably re-upload my old libraries again and get my events back. Overall this situation is kind-of sucky, as you can imagine. It's difficult not to get frustrated with the fact that this has become so complex, given Apple's fame for being both great for working with photos and media as well as making products that revolutionise the customer experience.
