I have just spoken to the online store and apparently it is not possible. I can take them out and give them to a friend who might need them??? Resources are finite, we are all encouraged to reduce waste and recycle and yet apple are forcing me to buy 2 products I don't want in order to update my Mac; I just want to be a responsible consumer and this seems so incredibly wasteful.
No.
You can go to an Apple Store and ask if you want.
The only Mac you can do that is to buy a Mac mini.
See here: Buy Mac mini - Apple
No and why is it an issue? It is always a good idea
to have a spare keyboard or mouse around.
It is an issue because it is so incredibly wasteful, both financially and environmentally. I certainly have no problem with people who haven't previously owned an iMac or people who choose to buy spares (of whatever part); it's just that I don't want or need either. I don't keep a spare iPhone just in case my iPhone breaks, or a spare Mac incase my Mac breaks etc. I have never needed a spare mouse or keyboard in the past 20 years of owning various iMac's. Indeed, even if I did, I now have a collection of 'spares' because every time I update my iMac I am required to buy a produce bundle containing a new keyboard and mouse (exactly the same as the ones I am using to type this). Resources are finite, we are all encouraged to reduce waste and recycle and yet apple are still forcing me to buy 2 products I don't want or need just to update my Mac; I just want to be a responsible consumer and this seems so wasteful.
FWIW, since you've been using iMacs for 20 years I would think you've never been able to buy one without a keyboard and mouse. It would be like purchasing a new car and asking the dealership if you could buy the car without tires because you already have four good tires that fit.
You can always share your thought with Apple: Product Feedback - Apple
No one here would know for sure, this is your question is something only your local Apple Store can help you with. I'd invite you to read the Terms of Use you agreed to so we can stay on-topic.
You're right, I already have quite a selection of spare keyboards and mouses! That was what prompted my question. I was just in the process of customising my latest Mac order and could see that I could add various things such as a Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad but couldn't see a way to leave off the bits I didn't need (even for free). I just hoped that someone on here might know of a way, but seemingly there isn't one. I will post it onto the product feedback link. Thanks
You're welcome.
