Restoring/ICloud Problem

I plugged my phone into my computer and it automatically synced (like usual)... Well my phone converted my contacts and other information back to when I had an iPhone 4.. So I lost many contacts. I thought by restoring it, it would bring back everything but every time I try, it says an error has taken place. I'm in college and need lots of those contacts I had! NEED HELP!!!!
