Repeated system hangs / hidd problem?

hi,

In the last few weeks I've been having a repeated problem on my Mac where the whole machine beachballs for about 45 seconds. It happens every half hour or so. I've had Console running to try and work out what process causes it, and every occurrence of the problem coincides with this pair of messages:

Does anyone have any idea what these messages relate to, and how I might resolve it? I'm on the point of doing a complete wipe and reinstall just to make the problem stop, but if there's an easier way...

Hey there freefrench,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. I understand your Mac is having some performance issues about every half an hour or so. I’ll be happy to hep with this so you can start using your Mac as expected.

Have you looked at Activity Monitor to get an idea of what app or process is causing this to happen? If not, you can use the steps from this link to help you do so and isolate the cause of this:

See how apps affect Mac performance, battery runtime, temperature, and fan activity

See if the issue continues in safe mode or a new user. This can tell you if the issue is related to a startup or login item, or if it’s related to a user setting:

Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac

How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac

Resetting the SMC and NVRAM may help with the issue as well:

Also, before doing a complete erase and install, try reinstalling but keeping your files and user settings intact using the files in this link:

Reinstall macOS

Let us know if these steps help.

Best wishes.
