Email indents - please stop

I'm using Mac Mail v.12.4 on a 2018 MacBook Pro. How do I stop indentation in email threads? In emails with many replies and forwards, the indentations compress the text earlier messages into narrow unreadable strings off to the right of my screen. Help!

Email Opens a Read Only Window When using Gmail on my MacPro and I open an email it automatically opens in a separate "read only" window. It doesn't allow me to reply or access other functions. How do I go back to reading mode and reply/forward etc.... There must an extension or preference setting that was changed.

Have you tried making any changes to the quotation level in:

Mail > Preferences > Composing > Responding?
