Brand new XS no case and people can’t hear me talk at all even if I’m screaming. How do I fix this?

This may seem ridiculously obvious, but it happened to my mother-in-law: did you remove the plastic protection film that is over both sides of the phone when you first open it? It covers both the microphone and the speaker - but does not interfere with the touch screen - and she used it for a week wondering why people couldn’t hear her and she couldn’t hear them.
People can’t hear me.
