MacBook hunting for WiFi: can I stop it?

Currently there are 14 wifi networks showing up on my MacBook Air. I only ever use one - the others are my neighbors. I assume it takes some bandwidth and battery to keep constantly scanning like this. Is there a setting to configure the macbook to stop looking for networks?

I don't know if it is possible but it doesn't use much power or bandwidth, if almost any at all.
