I have another mid-2015 MBP which had a battery bulging enough to prevent it from laying flat - so that it rocked around as you type. It’s serial number fell outside of the recall, so I had to pay for battery replacement. Shipping to and from Apple plus repair took 6 days, all within the time my recall repair has been away.
The battery recall requires the AASP to order a special shipping container from Apple due to the potential fire hazard. It can easily take several days just to receive the special packaging from Apple. Then the laptop must be shipped to the Apple repair depot via Ground shipping which can take 7 to 10 days in the US depending on your location. If you are in another region, then the times could be different.
A swollen battery is not a safety hazard and can be shipped by Air so the Apple repair depot may receive the laptop in a day or two. Also most AASPs have the standard shipping containers for normal laptop repairs. This cuts down on turn around time considerably.
One of our laptops for the battery recall was worked on a full week by the repair depot as they ran into a problem during testing so it actually took longer than the other battery recall repairs.
The AASP can certainly check the tracking number to see if the laptop reached its destination and they can also check the Apple service portal to see if the repair depot has received the laptop, if they've begun the repair, or are running finishing diagnostics. Since Apple does advise AASPs it could take 3 weeks, perhaps they are unwilling to check the status until after 3 weeks have elapsed.
Looking at My Support pages, you wouldn’t even know my machine is in for service. Is that common?
I don't know as I've never checked the status on that page. It seems to go against the whole purpose of the page not to have some kind of basic information. I would expect the page to at least show the AASP had your laptop. I'm not sure what type of updates are included on the status page. Did you mention this to the AASP? If a client asked me for an update when the official status page had no information, then I would check the status regardless just to make sure everything was Ok.
