Routines using Homekit

I am going on vacation and I want to set up a routine with my lights using HomeKit. Do I need to set up a home hub for that? I don’t need to control the routine remotely. I’m okay with just setting it up and leaving it alone.

How to use HomeKit I am starting out with HomeKit. I purchased some plugs. I really want a manual or how to. One of the plugs does not turn on at sunset. I read help things about setting up a 'hub'. Why? What is a hub? So I check my AppleTV and it says that it is already setup as a hub. So now what? Why does one device not know what time of day it is? And why can't Apple supply a 'how to'?

See Set up your HomePod, Apple TV, or iPad as a home hub - Apple Support. I suspect automations rely on the home hub, so one device or other needs to be able to carry out that role.
